Books I Have Read This Year
Sep. 1st, 2008 04:06 pmThe past month, in no particular order:
Ash: a Secret History- Mary Gentle - I liked it a lot, but the ending is distressingly abrupt.
The Commitment - Dan Savage - amusing, and enjoyable.
The Boleyn Inheritance - Phillipa Gregory - historical fiction, very good. Not all of hers become permanent in my library, but this one will.
Royal Harlot - Susan Holloway Scott - okay historical fiction, but I am pondering whether or not to keep it. I liked the fact that the protagonist likes sex.
The Godmother - Elizabeth Ann Scarborough - good, solid fiction.
New Amsterdam - Elizabeth Bear - Fantastic book of short stories, sort of steampunk, but not, with vampires. Most excellent, and a worthy use of a birthday gift card!
Marriage a la Mode - Elisabeth Fairchild - decent romance novel, might end up in the library.
Rumpole Misbehaves - John Mortimer - good solid Rumpole.
Girl in a Cage - Jane Yolen and Robert Harris - very good historical YA.
Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons - I suspect I'm missing the jokes. I don't think I've read enough of what it was mocking to really get it.
A Place of Hiding - Elizabeth George - Lynley.
With No One As Witness - Elizabeth George - Lynley.
The Devil in Music - Kate Ross - Her books are enthralling, and I save them for when I need something this good to be read the first time. Alas, there is only one left that I have not read yet! (Historical mystery)
Crime Through Time - Miriam Grace Monfredo (ed.) - gotten only because of the Kate Ross short story. Decent read.
Some Deaths Before Dying - Peter Dickinson - okay, now I know what the fuss is about, and I will be assembling his other works as additions to my library.
The Little Engine that Could - Watty Piper - Did you know the Engine is female? I somehow missed that completely. A gift from a special Fish, and one well needed. It sits on my desk at work, reminding me that I can.
The New Moon's Arms - Nalo Hopkinson - very good sff.
Festival Moon - C.J. Cherryh (ed.) - collection of short stories set on Merovin by several different authors. Pretty good. Not sure if I will acquire it yet
