Earthly Joys - Phillipa Gregory - fictionalized story of John Tradescant the elder, a gardener in early 17th century England. I find her books where women are the main character more interesting.

Reserved for the Cat - Mercedes Lackey - one of the Elemental Masters series. I needed something non-taxing to hide from my misery in, and this was a good choice.

The Weed the Ties the Hangman's Bag - Alan Bradley - free ARC received through librarything.
A decent mystery starring a ten or eleven year old chemistry-obsessed child, who does not get along with her older sisters. The writing is excellent, and it is obvious that the author likes chemistry too, though I did not check up on any of the reactions he describes. The mystery is well thought out, and believable. I will be looking for the first in this series, and keeping an eye out for the following books when they come out.

With a Bare Bodkin - Cyril Hare - good enough mystery.

A Dangerous Road - Kris Nelscott (Kristine Kathryn Rusch) - mystery set in Memphis just before April 4, 1968. Excellent book, though I am not sure how much to trust it on the racial stuff.

Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe - Interesting read. POV character is male, and I found myself wondering how the women in the story felt about what was going on. The structure is brilliant; Achebe sets up how things were, then with the arrival, how things fell apart.

Kaleidoscope - Dorothy Gilman - Less a coherent novel than an interlocking set of incidents. Pretty good.

Tenant for Death - Cyril Hare - as before, a good enough mystery!

The Blue Castle - L.M. Montgomery - what happens when a spinster (i.e. 29-year-old unmarried woman) thinks she is going to die, and decides to live her life for herself.

Year's total: 26
